Observations From The Field: Structurally Compromised Drainage Structure

Benchmark Service: Construction Phase Services

Issue: After the excavation of pavement surfaces, it was discovered that a drainage structure was structurally compromised, had insufficient flow capacity, and the storm system lateral pipe diameter was too small to handle new volume of water flow for the proposed new project area.

Solution: The old structure and lateral pipe were removed.  A new structure with the proper capacity and a new 12-inch lateral were designed, installed, and connected into the main 54-inch storm system lateral.

Possible Impact: By addressing the condition and capacity issues prior to completion of the pavement, costly future repairs were avoided by being proactive in maintaining the stormwater system.
